Reminders & Announcements from the Leadership Team

    Letter from the President
    Monday, March 16, 2026

    Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I hope that you all have had a restful weekend. I realize there is much going on in our world today! Therefore, all the more reason to stop and take in moments of your life that bring you joy, peace, and abundant love in your heart. As clinicians, we know that when our lives are filled with stress, we compromise. I hope we are being intentional in managing our personal and professional time, taking only the pieces that we can manage and avoiding unnecessary “extras” to prevent feeling overwhelmed. These are unpredictable times in world events, and this alone can cause a certain level of stress. Please take time out of your busy schedules to fill your hearts and time with positive, heartwarming connections.

We sent out the ballots to confirm all the leaders who have chosen to volunteer their time for the Long Beach South Bay Chapter of CAMFT. We are still shy of four roles, and I will continue to ask all of you to consider donating your skills and talents to the Chapter. Only members are permitted to vote, and only members are permitted to serve in leadership. I have been contacted by some who were not members, and they were more than happy to become members. I really appreciate all of you who have stepped up to help out the Chapter. It means a lot to me as the President, who is also only volunteering. When we have open roles, it puts more on my plate as well as on the other leaders.

The remaining open roles are as follows:

    • Treasurer – overseeing our finances, bookkeeper, documents, and ensuring everything gets paid. Yes, of course, filing receipts on the Google Shared Drive. Therefore, you must have some computer knowledge.
    • Hospitality – requires that this person can attend all events in person. That means every second Friday, 8:00–11:15 AM for 9 months, and every last Friday, 9:00–11:00 AM for 4 months. If you’re friendly and an extrovert, you are perfect.
    • Sponsorships – responds to our partnerships with other organizations and sets up Zoom meetings to discuss and negotiate the advertising needs expressed by the organization. If you are professional and know how to carry yourself well when discussing money matters or negotiating, then you may be ideal for this position.
    • Lastly, we are seeking a couple more folks who are tech-savvy on a computer to help with learning our back-office system and who are open to editing and creating content that meets guidelines.

REMEMBER:The time expected to donate for these roles is a minimum of 5 hours per month.

If any of you are interested in any of the described roles, I am more than happy to set up a Zoom meeting to get better acquainted with you and see if you would be a good fit with the rest of the current set of leaders. We are sincerely happy with our new set of team members and especially excited about the Vice President role being filled by Jennifer Seidner. She will be our new 2027 President! She has already rolled up her sleeves, made numerous suggestions, and acted upon them, making several improvements. Hopefully, you will see some of these as you interface with the website or become a presenter, member, or sponsor. She will be helping us streamline our work and bring fresh ideas to all of the leaders involved.

I leave all of you with a strong reminder about our upcoming March 27th in-person event. If you have someone in your life who is neurodivergent, whether it’s a client or not, I believe you may just learn something by showing up to this event. We will be holding this event in a different location from last year. It will be more centrally located. Just follow the parking directions on the website, please, to make it easier for yourself. We will provide a nice breakfast sponsored by Fusion Academy and their amazing staff! There will be half an hour before and after the event for networking as well. That is a bonus for some of you who can’t make other networking events due to time constraints. You can meet some peers and still earn continuing education credit. I hope to see many of you at this new location.

If you need additional help or have any questions about anything I have shared in this letter, do not hesitate to call me!

    Warmly,

    Chris McKnight, M.A., LMFT

CAMFT is urging immediate action to protect MFT’s access to education funding! A federal regulatory change is threatening counseling and therapy education and the future of the mental health workforce.

The U.S. Department of Education has announced a proposed rule that would redefine which graduate students qualify for higher federal graduate student loan limits as “professional students.” As currently drafted, the rule excludes all master’s level mental health professionals – including MFTs – from eligibility for these higher loan limits.

As a result, new students in these programs would be limited to accessing only $20,500 in federal loans per year, rather than the $50,000 available to students pursuing “professional degrees” such as an M.D. or Psy.D. The elimination of new Grad PLUS loans for incoming students beginning July 1, 2026, further restricts access, making graduate education financially unattainable for many, particularly first-generation students, those from underrepresented communities, and those pursuing careers in public and community-based care.

If finalized as currently proposed, this rule will:

    • Discourage students from entering the MFT profession.
    • Exacerbate mental health workforce shortages.
    • Increase student loan debt burdens through reliance on expensive private student loans.
    • Undermine access to care in already underserved communities.

    WE NEED YOUR STORY!!!

    • Please note: Your comment will be on public record.
    • We have prepopulated the comment letter here with the majority of what is needed and only need you to take five minutes to add to make this letter your personal story.

Help Provide Information: Medi-Cal Enrollment Issue for Nonprofits Rendering Psychotherapy Services

    • 501(c)(3) nonprofit community counseling centers, health centers, mental health agencies, and health clinics that primarily provide psychotherapy (known as non-specialty mental health services) for mild to moderate conditions are getting their applications for Medi-Cal enrollment denied.
    • As a result, they are unable to bill and get reimbursed for rendered psychotherapy services to Medi-Cal beneficiaries
    • CAMFT is looking to gather more information on the scope of the issue and how these application denials are impacting these organizations.
    • Please share this feedback form with nonprofit organizations that provide psychotherapy services and are experiencing enrollment and reimbursement issues with the Medi-Cal program.

    Overview:

This session will cover changes and trends in the rapidly evolving landscape of available activities that can be considered gambling. Specific attention and examination of prediction markets, crypto gambling and gambling-like mechanisms within video games such as loot boxes will be presented.

The focus will be on how to identify, screen and educate stakeholders and involved individuals impacted and affected by these new forms of gambling. The presentation will also discuss current research findings on prevalence rates, the limitations of existing responsible gambling measures in these new contexts, and the need for adaptive public health strategies and regulatory frameworks.

    Presenter Bio:

Timothy W. Fong, MD, is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. He is board certified in adult and addiction psychiatry and is the co-director of the UCLA Gambling Studies Program. The purpose of this program is to examine the clinical characteristics of gambling disorder in order to develop effective, evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies.

Dr. Fong is also a member of the Steering Committee of the UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids whose mission is to address the most pressing questions related to the impact of cannabis legalization through rigorous scientific study and discourse across disciplines. He is the senior attending psychiatrist for the UCLA Sports Psychiatry Service which provides leading edge psychiatric care to athletes, coaches and families. Dr. Wong also serves as President-Elect of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.

Objectives - Upon completion of this session participants will be able to:
