For the first time in many years, LBSB CAMFT is hosting a JOB FAIR! It will be held on Friday, July 11th in Torrance. If you are offering or know of any job openings for licensed or prelicensed therapists, please contact Chris McKnight at president@lbsbcamft.org REGISTER HERE FOR OUR NEXT EVENT!
Friday, June 13 Hybrid Meeting With Shawn S. Barnes M.D. Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Pre-licensed Associates may obtain CEs with prior approval from their supervisors. In order to be eligible to receive CEs, attendees must attend at least 80% of the presentation. COURSE DESCRIPTION Come join us for a casual, interactive discussion about psych meds. This will NOT be a lecture about pharmacologic mechanisms and neuroreceptors. Instead, we’ll discuss some very practical matters. When can medications be a crutch? How might medications affect the therapeutic relationship (for better or worse)? What effects (for better or worse) might medications have on symptoms you are trying to target? What new mental health issues might medications actually cause and how can you recognize it? When is it appropriate for a therapist to discuss medications or over-the-counters with clients? What’s the deal with marijuana and psychedelics? We’ll explore all things med-related and learn from each other. Please bring your own experiences, positive and negative, as therapists working with medicated patients (and trying to collaborate with irritating psychiatrists). Registration Fee Information: Pre-Licensed LBSB Chapter Member (Virtual & In-Person)- $5 Licensed LBSB Chapter Member (Virtual & In-Person)- $10 Non-Member (Virtual & In-Person)- $30 REGISTER HERE FOR OUR NEXT EVENT! A Letter From The President Hello Friends, Members, Subscribers, and Colleagues, Wow—summer is near, and the warm weather will be here soon! I hope you all have plans with family and friends to avoid the crowds. Some of you may not make plans at all and instead choose to stay home, finding ways to relax in your own space or backyard. Whatever you choose, I hope it helps you recharge for the second half of 2025! We have one big event coming up—the Job Fair (click HERE to register as an attendee)—and we’re counting on many of you to come out and enjoy meeting and greeting local agencies, organizations, and businesses. There will be plenty of exciting opportunities that just might be the right fit for you. Dress in your business attire, bring your resume, and don’t be shy about bragging a little! Especially when it comes to the incredible work and volunteer experiences you’ve taken part in. As we all know, in the mental health field, so many of us support important causes and ministries—often at no cost—because we care deeply. Don’t leave that off your resume! It speaks volumes to employers about who you are beyond the job. 📢 Table Hosts are still registering, and we invite those of you seeking interns, associates (pre-licensed), or licensed clinicians to sign up on the website (click HERE to register as a table host). If you need advertising for your facility, business, or agency, we’d love the opportunity to support you. We’ll take your content, events, or services and promote them to over a thousand clinicians in the field! Our contact base continues to grow, and if you’re hoping to expand your reach in Long Beach, the greater South Bay, communities and beyond, we recommend reaching out. We also have a few new leaders who are currently learning more about who we are and what we do as a Chapter, and they’ll be ready to help promote your services too! Plus, if you decide to become a Sponsor, you’ll receive 50% off as a Table Host at the Job Fair. Don’t miss out on the valuable resources LBSB CAMFT has to offer. Mark your calendars: Friday, July 11, 2025, from 10 AM to 1 PM. 🗓️📝📌⏳ 📢 I also want to extend another invitation to those of you with 3–5 hours a month to spare—join one of our committees! Be an assistant to one of our primary leaders and help lighten their load. You’ll have your choice of areas to help with, and it’s a wonderful way to learn more about leadership, how our Chapter runs, how we find presenters, coordinate events, and promote them. It’s a meaningful way to contribute to our community of professionals—and it’s fun and rewarding too! I’ve spent a lot of time talking about our big July event—the Job Fair—but don’t overlook June! We’ve got two events coming up: one offering 2 CEs on June 13th (What Should a Therapist Know About Psychiatric Medications?), and the other offering 1 CE on June 20th (Neuropsychological Assessment of Children and Teens – Why, When, and How?). Please visit the website to learn more and register. Hope to see you there! As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Sincerely,Chris McKnight, M.A., LMFT (310) 529-3011 President, LBSB Chapter of CAMFT Hi LBSB Members, Earlier this year, we introduced the idea of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) as a way to help members connect beyond our clinical roles—around shared interests, hobbies, and ways to recharge. While a few ideas began to take shape, we realized we need more input from YOU to truly make these groups meaningful and enjoyable. As we head into summer, we’re revisiting the idea with a fresh approach: What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Whether it's hiking, reading, meditating, or watching movies—we’d love to create informal spaces where members can gather, relax, and have fun. This short survey will help us shape the next steps. Thank you! Wendy Rodriguez M.A., LMFT LBSB CAMFT - Director of Membership Do you know someone who might want to join Long Beach South Bay CAMFT? Send them THIS flyer to let them know more about who we are and what we do!

California law recognizes associates and trainees as eligible healthcare providers to treat mental health and substance use disorder (MHSUD) issues. However, some commercial health plans are still prohibiting the billing of MHSUD services for associates and trainees in their policies and contracts. State CAMFT is looking to share specific language in your contracts or contracted health plan’s policies that prohibit the utilization of associates and trainees with the Department of Managed Health Care leadership to ensure all plans cover and reimburse MHSUD services rendered by all qualified eligible providers. Please take a few minutes to complete this feedback form and share your experience on this issue. The federal Department of Labor is working to conduct parity investigations to ensure insurance companies are covering medically necessary treatment of mental health conditions and substance use disorders as required by Senate Bill 855 and implementing regulations. They are looking to talk with California-based providers about United Healthcare’s networking practices and parity items. If you have experience working with United Healthcare and wish to participate in these investigations, please email Lauren Finke at lauren@thekennedyforum.org.
The window to apply for a grant for student loan repayment through the Licensed Mental Health Services Provider Education Program (LMH) opens on May 1, 2025 and closes on June 13, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.
