Meet Shawn

Shawn Barnes, M.D. is a psychiatrist who lives and works in Encinitas in private practice (www.sbarnesmd.com). He practices a conservative approach to psychiatric medications, usually seeing them as short-term bridges, while exploring treatments of diet, exercise, purpose, mindfulness, herbal, supplemental and other holistic approaches. He is also interested in building bridges between therapist and psychiatrist communities. He is the sole psychiatrist member of SDNC-CAMFT.

Course Summary

It's happened to all of us. We all have clients who come to us with a self-diagnosis of Adult ADHD after doing "research" on social media. But what if you observe that their symptoms are better explained by a host of other causes like poor sleep, overwork, anxiety, or social media itself? How do you avoid validating the "official diagnosis" of Adult ADHD when it isn't warranted, but still maintain an alliance with the client?

Join us for a practical and clinically-focused discussion of why self-diagnosis of ADHD has  become so common and how to approach clients when you disagree with their self diagnosis.
