Challenging Behaviors in Couples: Strategies For Working with Difficult Clients

    Hybrid Meeting

With Dr. Dana McNeil, PsyD, LMFT

    Co-facilitated by Jeffrey Young, LMFT

Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Pre-licensed Associates may obtain CEs with prior approval from their supervisors. In order to be eligible to receive CEs, attendees must attend at least 80% of the presentation.

    Course Description

Therapists who work with couples will often encounter behaviors such as:

    - Gaslighting

    - Passive aggressiveness
    - Withholding emotions, connection, and sex
    - Anger
    - High conflict
    - Narcissistic behaviors

These dynamics between partners lead to difficulty meeting each other’s needs and turning towards each other. This webinar will provide you with Gottman interventions that will address these behaviors so that you can have more productive and effective therapy sessions.

    Educational Goals

The attendees of this webinar will better understand the negative patterns of behaviors contributing to poor clinical outcomes when working with couples and will be able to recognize and apply alternative interventions.

    Measurable Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:
-To identify 5 behaviors that create disconnection and lead to poor communication in couples.
-To identify 5 evidence-based Gottman Therapy interventions to create different outcomes when these behaviors appear in session.
-To normalize and provide psychoeducation to clients about how challenging behaviors contribute to marital distress.
-To provide 3 different examples of alternative solutions for couples to combat negative communication patterns.
