    Financial Therapy Basics – What is it and why is it especially important now?

    The workshop will start with a history of how and when financial therapy was born. The basics tools and concepts of financial will be explored. We’ll take a deeper dive into money beliefs and how they affect behaviors. Case studies will be presented illustrating how financial dysfunction shows up in people’s lives and how financial therapy approaches these issues. A brief discussion of how attachment theory, EFT, and IFS are applied to financial therapy. And we’ll wrap up the discussion with an overview of where Financial Therapy is today and current plans for further development of the field.


    Educational Learning Objectives


    1. Understand what Financial Therapy is and when it might be helpful for your clients. 

    2. Know what Money Scripts/beliefs are and how to identify them in your clients.

    3. Know how to identify a financial flashpoint in a client’s life and how it impacts their life today.

    4. How cultural influences impact financial wellbeing and money decisions.

    BIO:

    Tara Unverzagt first explored financial planning as a kid growing up with a mom who became a financial planner in the 1970s, before the career even existed.  

    Tara has been working in financial planning, investment advice, and tax preparation for 30 years. She specializes in multigenerational financial planning including successful retirement, generation wealth transfer, and financial coaching for younger generations. 

    Tara includes Financial Therapy while working with her clients to address beliefs and behaviors that prevent them from achieving financial wellbeing or affects their relationships. 

    Tara received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Purdue University and an MBA degree from Pepperdine University. She is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and a Certification in Financial Therapy Level I (CFT-I). In addition to being a registered tax preparer with California Tax Education Council and the IRS and an Investment Advisory Representative (IAR) with the SEC.
